SMO 254 Plates is alloyed with columbium-tantalum (referred to as niobium) and allows good mechanical properties at high temperatures. SMO 254 Coils is essentially non-magnetic in the annealed condition and can only be hardened by cold working. Alloy 254 Sheets has good resistance to corrosion and oxidation and good creep strength. Alloy 254 Plates is the higher carbon composition form and demonstrates improved high temperature and creep properties. Alloy 254 Coils can be annealed at temperature ranging from 1010 Degree C to 1193 Degree C (1850 Degree F to 2000 Degree F) and then quenched with water. 254 SMO Sheets is another stainless steel in a class of metals labeled of precipitation-hardened steels. Although 254 SMO Plates requires higher initial forces than other alloys, it is quite tough and ductile and can be readily stamped, blanked, spun and drawn.
254 SMO Coils have to be affixed with relatively shorter distances from each other (significantly shorter than those of non-alloyed steels), in order to prevent strong deformation, shrinking or flaking tack welds.
